TSDPCA 2021 Conference Takeaways

September 2, 2021

Last week, Radius Security’s Texas team attended the 4-day Texas School District Police Chief Association 2021 conference in Galveston, TX, at which more than 140 SBLE Chiefs, Commanders, and Officers attended. Our team set up our famous mugshot mug printing station and brought door and draw prizes for the attendees. It was rewarding to connect with local law enforcement agencies who dedicate themselves to the safety of their school districts and their communities. Here are three important takeaways from the conference:

The Picture is  Bigger Than It Looks Like

While the direct and tangible costs of damages and losses from a crime can be easily quantified and measured, indirect and intangible costs are often neglected when assessing the security needs of a property. For instance, if a catalytic converter is stolen from a school bus, the consequences of this crime are way beyond the equipment replacement. First, the vehicle will have to be towed to a repair center. Additionally, many students will have to find alternative transportation arrangements for the time being. The same concept goes for the thefts of learning supplies, such as computers, which can greatly affect the productivity of children at school.

Seeing the Crime in Progress Goes a Long Way

Having access to live videos of active crime scenes is crucial to the law enforcement officers’ apprehension success. In fact, security solutions can provide footage of a crime in progress, like our Redhanded Human Detection Technology™, which helps police locate suspects quickly and safely. Updates about the suspect’s behaviour and actions can help first responders appropriately evaluate and prepare for the incident when arriving on site.

Multiplying Forces with Artificial Intelligence Technologies

With the current shortage in the police force, officers are challenged to be present everywhere at the same time. We understand that law enforcement personnel are expected to act as physical deterrence, monitor public areas, respond to crimes and investigate pieces of evidence. Artificial intelligence technology can help dispatchers triage and analyze any suspicious alerts on private properties to prioritize incidences better and more effectively. For example, video analytics can determine if a trigger is associated with an unknown individual or with a harmless animal on site. Nowadays’s security technologies allow police to work smarter, not harder.

We would like to extend our thank you to the organizers of this year's Texas School Districts Police Chiefs Association 2021 Conference. It has been a privilege to work closely with law enforcement members to help create safer communities for future generations.
